Solving “Internet Explorer has blocked an active X control” Error

 

I was using IE 9 to browse webpages, but suddenly get an error as below:

 

“Internet Explorer has blocked an active X control so this page may not display correctly”


To investigate this error mesage, we need to know what activeX control is:

There is an activeX control blocked by Internet Explorer. What is ActiveX control? From Wikipedia: ActiveX controls, mini program building blocks, can serve to create distributed applications working over the Internet through web browsers. Examples include customized applications for gathering data, viewing certain kinds of files, and displaying animation. If certain activeX control is not working, the webpage will not display components such as pictures, videos.

 

So, why is IE blocking the activeX control? It may be virus or malware changing the settings in IE, or registry being corrupted, or your antivirus mistakes good activeX as dangerous one …

To solve this issue, you will need to follow below steps to troubleshoot the problem:

Step 1: Enable ActiveX controls in IE.

a) Open Internet Explorer.

b) Click on Tools menu and select Internet Options.

c) Under Security tab click on Custom level.

d) Scroll down to the ActiveX controls and plug-ins group, and ensure that all ActiveX options are set to either “Enable” or “Prompt”. Since the remote viewing software is published in an unsigned state, please make certain that the options “Download unsigned ActiveX controls” and “Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe” are set to “Prompt”.

Step 2: Reset IE to go back to defaults and clear harmful add-ons installed by malware

Open Internet Explorer

Click the Tools button , and then click Internet options.

Click the Advanced tab, and then click Reset.

Select the Delete personal settings check box if you would also like to remove browsing history, search providers, Accelerators, home pages, Tracking Protection, and ActiveX Filtering data.

In the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box, click Reset.

When Internet Explorer finishes applying default settings, click Close, and then click OK.

Close Internet Explorer.
