Troubleshooting Access Denied Error

Are you receiving an error “Folder is not accessible–Access is denied” on your Windows XP Professional PC? This type of problem occurs when you installed or upgraded your PC to Windows XP OR the folder was created on NTFS.

Error will continue to occur even submitting the correct login credentials. To troubleshoot this issue below are few steps to be taken:

  • a) Click on My Computer
  • b) From Tools menu, select Folder Option
  • c) Locate View tab and clear Use simple file sharing (Recommended) check box in advanced settings and click OK
  • d) Go to the properties of the folder which is throwing error
  • e) Go to Security tab, click Advanced button and then display the Owner tab
  • f) From the name list select your user name and then select Replace owner on subcontainers and objects check box
  • g) OK
  • By doing so you may still receive an error : “You do not have permission to read the contents of directory Folder Name. Do you want to replace the directory permissions with permissions granting you Full Control? All permissions will be replaced if you press Yes.”
  • h) Click Yes and then OK

Now everything would be working because you have reapplied the permissions and security setting on the folder which was reporting errors.

Access denied error message may be displayed on Windows 2003 or 2000 sever while accessing folders that are located on NTFS system volume. Error message “Access is Denied” continues to occur even if you have the required NTFS permissions to access the file. This error occurs when you are trying to access a file that has been encrypted by another user. In this situation same user who encrypted the file will have to decrypt it.
